Menopause and Muscle Cramps: Why They Get Worse and How to Stop Them

  • Diuretic medications. Many women are prescribed diuretics for blood pressure or fluid retention — and diuretics dramatically increase magnesium and potassium excretion.   • Cramps with swelling, redness, or warmth in the leg — this combination is a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) red flag and requires urgent medical review. DVT is more common in women over 40, and cramp-like pain is one of its presentations. Do not manage this with stretching.
  • Cramps that do not respond to any lifestyle intervention after four to six weeks — persistent cramping unresponsive to magnesium, hydration, and electrolytes may indicate an underlying condition such as peripheral arterial disease, thyroid dysfunction, or a medication side effect that requires investigation.
  • Neurological symptoms alongside cramping — numbness, tingling, weakness, or muscle wasting alongside cramps suggests a neurological cause (nerve compression, peripheral neuropathy) rather than a simple electrolyte imbalance. These require investigation rather than supplementation.
