Calcium — 1,200 mg/day for women 50+

Calcium is the primary mineral in bone. Women 50 and over need 1,200 mg daily — most are getting far less. Supplements can fill gaps, but food sources are absorbed more efficiently.

Vitamin D — 1,000–2,000 IU/day

Excessive cardio without strength training

Alcohol

Smoking

Sedentary lifestyle

High sodium diet

Excess sodium causes the kidneys to excrete more calcium in urine, leaching it from the body. Reducing processed food intake — the primary source of dietary sodium — helps retain the calcium your body needs.

Should You Get a DEXA Scan?

Yes — if you are 50 or older, or if you are in early menopause with additional risk factors (family history, small frame, history of low body weight, smoking). A DEXA scan (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) measures your bone mineral density and is the gold standard for assessing osteoporosis risk.

Results are given as a T-score, which compares your bone density to that of a healthy 30-year-old:

Above -1.0 — Normal bone density
