Strength training: the biggest lever
No supplement, food, or intervention addresses as many of the root causes of menopause water retention as consistent strength training. What NOT to Do
- Diuretic supplements or "detox teas." They often worsen the problem: the dehydration they produce triggers the compensatory aldosterone response, producing more retention once the effect wears off. Women who use detox teas for menopause puffiness typically find they need to use them continuously and that fluid rebounds badly when they stop.
- Cutting sodium to extremes. Very low sodium intake disrupts the sodium-potassium balance and can trigger counter-regulatory hormonal responses that worsen retention. It also produces fatigue, muscle cramps, and reduced exercise performance — a significant problem when strength training is one of the primary interventions for retention. The goal is reducing processed food sodium rather than eliminating sodium from whole foods.
- Aggressive low-carb dieting. Very-low-carbohydrate diets do produce rapid initial fluid loss — glycogen stores in the liver and muscle release 3–4g of water per gram of glycogen as they deplete. Women sometimes experience a dramatic drop of 4–6 lbs in the first week of a low-carb diet and attribute it to fat loss. This is water — and it returns when carbohydrates are reintroduced.
