Menopause and Thyroid: Why Your Thyroid Changes After 40 and What to Do

  • Hoarse or deepened voice — caused by swelling of the vocal cords

Request a full thyroid panel — not just TSH alone. Ask for TSH, Free T4, and Free T3. Standard testing often stops at TSH, which can miss early thyroid dysfunction, especially when TBG levels are altered by estrogen fluctuations. A woman with a TSH of 4.2 will be told her results are "normal" by one practitioner while another considers her thyroid underfunctioning.   • TSH — the standard screening test, but not the full picture

  • Free T3 — measures the available active thyroid hormone that cells actually use
  • TPO and TG antibodies — to screen for Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the most common cause of hypothyroidism
